Winter Boat Care
Keep Your Boat Safe & Ready for Spring
Just because your boat is tucked away for the winter doesn’t mean you can forget about it until spring. A little attention now can save you from costly repairs later and make your spring launch a breeze. Here’s how to keep your boat safe, whether it’s in the water or on land.
Winter Weather Events
After a big snow or ice storm it is always a good idea to check on your boat to ensure it is safe:
- Check Your Dock Lines: High winds or unusually low tides can stretch dock lines, making them less effective—or worse, causing them to break. Add chafing guards where lines pass through chocks to protect both lines and your boat.
- Keep Cockpit Drains Clear: If you don’t have a cockpit cover, make sure drains are free of debris. After snow or freezing rain, safely clear drains and scuppers. Every year boats sink at the dock because snow turned to ice weighed down the boat, letting water in through the drains.
- For Boats Stored on Land: Be Sure that any remaining snow and ice is removed quickly from cockpit to prevent water damage.
Let Your Boat Breathe
Good ventilation prevents mold, mildew, and damp interiors:
- Slightly open portlights if water can’t get in.
- Open lockers, cabinets, and, if possible, the engine room hatch.
- Place a few moisture-absorbing containers around the interior.
Battery Care
Proper winter care is essential to extend the life of the boat’s batteries.
- If you’re not leaving your charger on all winter, run it for a few hours every few weeks to keep your batteries healthy.
- If able, properly store batteries off the boat in a cool dry place to prevent suffocation and freezing.
Covers and Canvas
Winter covers and canvas are a great way to protect your boat during winter months, but they aren’t “set it and forget it” strategy.
- Check covers and canvas after storms or high winds to make sure everything remains secure.
- Make sure covers or canvas are not rubbing against the gelcoat, which can cause damage over time.
A little winter maintenance now keeps your boat safe and ready for a smooth spring launch. Taking the time to check lines, drains, ventilation, and covers can prevent headaches and keep your boat in top shape all season long.
